New Schengen visa rules


The European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee has approved new draft rules for citizens of countries that are allowed to enter the Schengen area without a visa to apply for permission before reaching the European Union.

Forty-two to 12 voted for the new measures, the European Information and Travel Information System (EITIAS), which would examine the data of non-visa travelers in order to enhance security measures and address irregular migration or high epidemiological risks.

The European Parliament said in a statement that under the new rules, citizens of countries outside the European Union who do not require a visa to the Schengen region must fill out an electronic form containing their personal data, including name, date and place of birth, gender and nationality, Travel "validity and country of issue", home address, contact information and the European country from which the traveler will enter.

The travel authorization is to cost 10 euros ($ 11.8) although some travelers will be exempt from paying such fees, such as those under the age of 18, over 60 years, family members of EU citizens, students and researchers traveling for academic purposes, for three years.

With more than 60 countries whose citizens can travel visa-free to the European Union, the European Commission expects a significant increase in the number of visa-free travelers across the Schengen border in the coming years, from 30 million in 2014 to 39 million in 2020.

The cost of preparing the system is expected to reach 212.1 million euros (250 million dollars) in addition to an annual cost of 85 million euros (100 million dollars).
