The Japanese Ministry of Justice, which oversees immigration, has announced new laws governing permanent residence, hoping to attract and retain more skilled workers from around the world.

The new procedures will take effect from March 2017. Some applicants will be allowed to receive their permanent residence after only one year in Japan, and all immigrants will be eligible for permanent residence in Japan after ten years of residence.
