Japan's Ministry of Justice, which oversees immigration, has announced new laws governing permanent residence in Japan, hoping to attract and retain more skilled workers from around the world.

Some applicants will be allowed to receive permanent residence in Japan after one year. All immigrants without exception will also be eligible for a lifetime stay in Japan after a ten-year stay.

The Ministry also adopted a point-based system in 2012 to reduce the waiting period, especially for highly skilled applicants, according to three categories: advanced academic research activities, advanced specialist / technical activities, and advanced business management activities.

According to this system, each applicant who has completed the necessary points and according to these categories is entitled to receive a permanent residence visa after five years. However, the recent changes have reduced the period to three years only for those who obtained more than 70 points and one year for each of Ahmed On more than 80 points.

They also added several additional ways to collect points, such as getting a job contract at a Japanese company, and obtaining certificates from prestigious institutes.

The system has been expanded and divided into several categories, including academic background, professional achievements, salary, age, permits, position, and special achievements.
