In sports betting, some bets carry intrinsically more value than others. This article looks at ways to get smart at sports betting, particularly football, looking at some of the most popular bets offered by leading bookies. If you want to get a better return for your bets, read on.

Winner
The simplest of all the bets - Winner covers which team you feel will win, or whether you feel a draw would be a more likely result.

The problem with betting only on the winner is that, to get any value from your return, you need to bet on a result that the bookmaker has deemed to be less likely. This might occur if a lower-league team beats a Premier League team in the FA Cup, for example. However, it's not something that happens every week, as reflected in the odds, and so it's not a reliable bet, by and large.

That said, if you have strong evidence that the bookies are wrong, and a surprise win or draw will happen, bet on it.

Value: Average

Winning Margin
If you're interested in betting on a match between teams a long way apart in terms of quality, where one team is far more likely to win than the other, you can still get a good return from betting on Winning Margin, or the number of goals a team can win by.

This is an excellent bet to look at, because it prioritizes research. If you have a high-scoring team like Barcelona in 2011 or Manchester United in 2008, for example, then you can reliably place a bet on a higher winning margin for that team.

Lower-scoring teams, on the other hand, will yield a lower margin of victory. This is also the case, regularly, for cup finals and local derbies; the higher the stakes and the higher the price of defeat to a side, the more cautious they usually become.

Value: With research, very good

First Goalscorer
This is a bet on the player who scores first in a match. There are a few problems with betting on the first goalscorer. Though you might have a player who scores regularly, there is no telling he will be the first to score in a match - football, after all, is a team game with ten outfield players, all of whom have a chance of scoring.

It's far better to focus on Anytime Goalscorer, though the odds may seem less attractive.

This is often a bet you will see in TV adverts for bookies and "in-play" (during the game) bets. There is a reason for this: you're unlikely to win the bet. If you want to know how to win at sports betting, it's important first to cut out as many variables as possible.

Value: Poor

Anytime Goalscorer
Anytime Goalscorer is a bet on a player scoring during a match, regardless of time or order.

It's a good bet to place if you have analyzed different players' scoring stats and seen that, either, the player has an unexpectedly high number of goals for the season, or he has a good record of scoring against a particular team.

This bet carries more value for the bettor than the similar First Goalscorer bet, as it does not relay for a payout on the good luck or good timing of a goal, rather focusing on a player's overall skill and ability.
